Newfoundland and Labrador Winter Games Wrap Up in Gander

After a week full of competition, sport and camaraderie, the 2024 Newfoundland and Labrador Winter Games came to a close this past weekend in Gander.

The Honourable Dr. John Haggie, Minister of Municipal and Provincial Affairs and Member of the House of Assembly for Gander, attended both the opening ceremonies on February 24 and the closing ceremonies on March 2. At the event, Minister Haggie presented the Premier’s Cup to Team St. John’s/North, who finished at the top of the medal standings with nine gold, eight silver and three bronze medals.

The Sport Newfoundland and Labrador Trophy was presented to Team Mount Pearl/South for showing the most improvement from one Newfoundland and Labrador Winter Games to the next.

The Lieutenant Governor’s Award was presented to Team Indigenous as the team that best demonstrated the overall spirit of friendly competition and sportsmanship – the essence of the Newfoundland and Labrador Games.

The Newfoundland and Labrador Games is the largest multi-sport event for youth in the province and has been encouraging participation in sport and the pursuit of athletic excellence for nearly 50 years.

To support this year’s Games in Gander, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador made $740,000 available, which is administered through Sport NL and the Town of Gander. Sport NL works in collaboration with the local host organizing committees and provincial sport organizations to deliver the Games.
