Public Advisory: Child Death Review Committee Case Review

Under section 13.5 of the Fatalities Investigations Act, the Minister of Justice and Public Safety is required, within 60 days after receiving a report from the Child Death Review Committee (CDRC), to make public those recommendations relating to:

  • Relevant protocols, policies and procedures
  • Standards and legislation
  • Linkages and coordination of services
  • Improvements to services affecting children and pregnant women

The CDRC forwarded a report to the Minister of Justice and Public Safety on December 5, 2023.

This report resulted in the following recommendation:

  • It is recommended that the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure and the Department of Digital Government and Service NL consider further amendments to section 129 of the Highway Traffic Act to enhance the safety of young children learning to ride a bicycle, including supervisory requirements, and allowing children to ride on the sidewalk until they develop the skills to ride on the road with traffic.

This report has been forwarded to the Office of the Child and Youth Advocate.
