June 5, 2026

In recognition of World Environment Day on June 5, the Honourable Chris Tibbs, Minister of Environment, Conservation and Climate Change, highlights the importance of continuing to take action on climate change, particularly for rural and coastal communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador that are vulnerable to the impacts of climate change such as coastal erosion, storms and flooding.

Led annually by the United Nations, World Environment Day is celebrated by millions of people worldwide and is an opportunity to recognize actions being taken locally and globally to protect the natural environment.

This year’s theme, Climate Action, underscores the critical role that nature – our forests, wetlands, and oceans – plays in regulating the impacts of climate change. These natural systems capture carbon emissions, absorb excess heat from a warming planet, and help manage water levels to reduce the risk of flooding.

Environmental stewardship is essential for a sustainable future. This includes supporting modern waste diversion initiatives, advancing efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, investing in climate change adaptation, and assisting residents and communities affected by climate-related disasters such as floods, wildfires, and severe storms.

Through Budget 2026: Opportunity For All of Us, our government is investing in environmental protection, climate adaptation, and community resilience across Newfoundland and Labrador. This includes $36 million for the Oil to Electric Program, $3.6 million to enhance waste management initiatives and $2.3 million over two years to produce flood risk maps for vulnerable communities.
