The Honourable Chris Tibbs, Minister of Environment, Conservation and Climate Change, has announced the following relative to Environmental Assessment – Part 10 – of the Environmental Protection Act.

Undertakings Registered:

Terra Nova Cabin Access Trail                                                    (Reg. 2414)
Proponent: Fred Cox

The proponent is proposing to construct a 5.2-kilometer ATV trail, to provide year-round access to their cabin located on Terra Nova Lake. Trail clearing and construction would be executed using an excavator, with the corridor restricted to a maximum width of 3 metres to deter larger motorized vehicles. The undertaking was registered on June 11, 2026. The deadline for public comment is July 17, 2026, and the minister’s decision is due by July 26, 2026.

Fischells Salt Dome Power Generation Project                       (Reg. 2413)
Proponent: Triple Point Resources

The proponent is proposing to construct and operate a renewable energy storage and generation facility in the Bay St. George area of western Newfoundland. Proposed key project components include: a main facility with salt caverns, salt production, compressed air energy storage and associated infrastructure; marine components and pipelines to transport seawater from St. George’s Bay for use in the solution mining process and potentially for saltwater disposal; a wind farm and associated infrastructure; and a transmission line connecting the facility to the provincial electricity system at the Bottom Brook terminal station. Construction is planned to begin in 2028, the facility would be fully operational by 2031, and operations would run for 50 years or more.  A description of the project can be found on the Department of Environment, Conservation and Climate Change website at: www.gov.nl.ca/eccc/env-assessment/projects-list/.

Blue Cove Quarry                                                                          (Reg. 2412)
Proponent: Department of Transportation and Infrastructure

The proponent is proposing the expansion of an existing quarry located approximately three kilometers north of Blue Cove, along Route 430 on the Great Northern Peninsula. The project would expand the operations area to approximately 23 hectares. The site is considered important due to the scarcity of suitable aggregate sources in the region. The expansion aims to ensure a stable, long-term supply of materials. Work would be carried out by contractors under Provincial Government oversight, with operations typically occurring between April and November each year.
