The following statement was read in the House of Assembly today by the Honourable Andrea Barbour, Minister of Environment, Conservation and Climate Change:

Speaker, I stand today to announce that we are launching stakeholder engagement on the Climate Change Action Plan through EngageNL.

This government is committed to supporting communities in adapting to climate change and recovering from its impacts.

We are also committed to working with stakeholders to create a new, more attainable Climate Change Action Plan with clear and achievable emissions reduction targets.

Our new action plan will prioritize disaster resilience, municipal preparedness and environmental awareness, and provide a pathway to reduce emissions that is realistic and actionable.

Stakeholder engagement will be the foundation of this plan. We are seeking input from residents, municipalities, working groups and Indigenous Governments and Organizations to hear their perspectives and ideas.

I encourage all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to take this opportunity to have their say about how government can help our province prepare and adapt to our changing climate.

Speaker, we understand that addressing climate change is crucial to the well-being and prosperity of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.

Climate change action is a priority for this government, and together we will build a more resilient and sustainable province for generations to come.

Thank you
