March 20, 2026

The Honourable Lela Evans, Minister of Women and Gender Equality, today announced the recipients of the 100th Anniversary of Women Achieving the Right to Vote and Hold Public Office Scholarship Program.

One hundred scholarships valued at $1,000 have been presented to 100 outstanding young women in grades 10-12 from communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.

Minister Evans was joined by the Her Honour, the Honourable Joan Marie Aylward, Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Honourable Tony Wakeham, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador.

This scholarship program was designed in recognition of 100th Anniversary of Women Achieving the Right to Vote and Hold Public Office, and to support the leadership development and post-secondary goals of young women in our province.

Recipients were selected based on the following criteria:

  • Community contributions and leadership potential
  • Demonstrated passion or initiative for leadership in their school and community
  • Academic performance

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador congratulates all 284 individuals who submitted applications for the scholarship program, and commends their commitment to leadership, education, and community service.

As we mark the conclusion of the 100th anniversary on April 3, we are reminded each day by young leaders across the province that the future is bright, equitable, and full of possibility, for all of us.

Quotes
“Marking 100 years since women in Newfoundland and Labrador achieved the right to vote and hold public office, this scholarship program honours that legacy by investing directly in the leaders of tomorrow. These young women are already making meaningful contributions in their schools, and communities, and this support helps ensure they have every opportunity to continue learning, leading and shaping a more inclusive and equitable future for our province.”
Honourable Tony Wakeham
Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador

“A century after women in this province secured the right to vote and lead, today’s young women remind us that democracy thrives when every voice is empowered. Their leadership, courage, and commitment to community light the path to a future that is brighter, more equitable, and full of possibility for all of us.”
Honourable Lela Evans
Minister of Women and Gender Equality
