The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador has returned to the House of Assembly today (Monday, March 30) to proceed with debate on legislation that will make the reduction in the provincial gas tax on gasoline and diesel permanent.

This legislation is required to meet regulatory timelines to ensure the current reduction remains in place beyond March 31, 2026. Failure to pass the bill today will result in gas prices increasing on April 1.

The Provincial Government has emphasized the importance of advancing the legislation in a timely manner to provide certainty and continued tax relief to Newfoundland and Labradorians. The Official Opposition has proposed an amendment seeking a further reduction. Our government is committed to other affordability measures based on an informed plan. This bill represents one step of a multi-pronged approach.

The Provincial Government remains committed to advancing affordability measures that make a meaningful difference in people’s lives while maintaining a responsible and sustainable fiscal approach – for all of us.

Quotes
“People in this province expect their House of Assembly to work for them – not against them. We have put forward a clear, responsible plan to permanently lower the provincial gas tax and provide certainty for families. The only thing standing in the way right now is delay. We need all Members of the House of Assembly to focus on getting this done.”
Honourable Tony Wakeham
Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador

“This legislation delivers real, lasting relief for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. This is not the time for last-minute changes or delay tactics that put that certainty at risk. Today, Members of the House of Assembly will have an opportunity to support continued tax savings at the pumps, and we are focused on getting this legislation passed.”
Honourable Craig Pardy
Minister of Finance
