The following statement was read in the House of Assembly today by the Honourable Lela Evans, Minister of Women and Gender Equality, Labrador Affairs, and Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation.

Speaker, I rise to join family, friends and Indigenous communities throughout the province in mourning the passing of Emma Reelis, a proud Inuk Elder, residential school Survivor, community leader, and advocate for Indigenous peoples.

A kind and caring woman who uplifted others through her wisdom, compassion and commitment to truth, Elder Emma will be remembered for her warmth, humour, honesty and generous spirit, and deep devotion to family and community. She was a true friend to many.

She inspired people to embrace their identity, share their stories, and take pride in who they are. Despite the hardships she endured as a residential school Survivor, she transformed those experiences into a source of strength. Elder Emma spoke openly about healing, reconciliation and educating others. Her courage to speak about heavy life experiences inspired and helped heal others.

She never turned down an opportunity to bring prayers and share her knowledge at gatherings – considering it an honour to be invited to speak.

Elder Emma, the honour was all ours. Your quiet but powerful voice helped when we needed one. You have left a legacy.

On behalf of all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, I extend sincere condolences to her family, friends, fellow Elders, and all whose lives she touched. May they find comfort in her legacy, and may her memory continue to guide us toward understanding, respect and reconciliation.

May she rest in peace.

Thank-you Speaker.
