Today, the Honourable Craig Pardy, Minister of Finance, introduced legislation to reduce the provincial tax on gasoline and diesel to 0 cents per litre.
With the provincial tax currently sitting at 7.5 cents per litre for gasoline and 9.5 cents per litre for diesel, this legislative change will ensure that residents of Newfoundland and Labrador see relief at the pumps at a time when gas and diesel sit at record high levels in the province.
Including Harmonized Sales Tax (HST), drivers of gasoline vehicles will save 8.625 cents per litre, while drivers of diesel vehicles save 10.925 cents per litre.
Through legislative amendments, the Provincial Government will also establish a measure that keeps the provincial gasoline and diesel tax at zero for as long as oil prices remain above a specified threshold.
This additional protection means that when oil prices are high, Newfoundlanders and Labradorians will not face the added cost of provincial fuel tax on top of those higher prices.
Since Budget 2026, the Provincial Government has invested more than $275 million in cost-of-living relief for residents, fulfilling their commitment to making life more affordable for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.
Quote
“Affordability remains top of mind for the people of Newfoundland and Labrador and, as committed, our government is taking action and providing relief where people need it most. Last week, we announced relief for power bills and heating homes that use furnace and stove oil. Today, we’re tackling gas and diesel prices. And in the coming weeks we will make further announcements to ease pressures and prove to residents that we are a government that cares and a government that listens.”
