P25 Radio Applications Now Open for Volunteer Fire Departments

  • Forestry, Agriculture and Lands

June 4, 2026

Applications for P25 radios are open to volunteer fire departments throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. The radios support emergency response efforts by connecting first responders on the province-wide radio system.

Budget 2026 provided $7 million in new funding for equipment, supplies, staffing, volunteer firefighter training and emergency preparedness resources. This new funding includes $2.9 million for P25 radios, which provide vital and secure communications during emergency situations, especially in areas with limited cell service.

Currently, more than 6,800 P25 radios are in use by first responders and organizations across Newfoundland and Labrador, with most local volunteer fire departments equipped with three radios.

Each volunteer fire department can apply for up to two radios. Different types of P25 radios are available:

  • Portable: a handheld, battery-operated radio.
  • Mobile: a radio installed in a fire department-owned vehicle (dash-mounted).
  • Base station: a radio unit installed in a fixed location (e.g., on a desk in a building).

Applications are open until June 30. For information, contact the Provincial Radio Communications Office at 1-833-696-7726 or PRCO@gov.nl.ca.
