Applications are now open for Newfoundland and Labrador Community Wildfire Prevention and Mitigation Program funding.
An initial investment of approximately $2.26 million is helping 58 communities develop community wildfire resiliency plans and community-based wildfire prevention/mitigation projects. The second round of funding will support additional communities across the province to reduce the risk of wildfire and better protect homes, critical infrastructure, and the environment around them.
The Newfoundland and Labrador Community Wildfire Prevention and Mitigation Program supports local risk assessments, fuel management planning, and mitigation activities. It strengthens community-level emergency preparedness by providing guidance to property owners to help them protect their homes from wildfires.
Communities are encouraged to apply for funding to develop and implement Community Wildland Fire Resiliency Plans. These plans will incorporate education, emergency planning, vegetation management, and other principles to implement wildfire prevention and mitigation projects at a community level.
Applications will be assessed by the Newfoundland and Labrador FireSmart Committee with support from a technical sub-committee.
Recommendations for funding are based on whether the proposed activities qualify for funding under the parameters of the program, the quality of the application, and the value of the proposed activities to reduce the risk of wildfire for that area/community.

The program is supported by a $12.8-million joint investment from the federal and provincial governments under Natural Resources Canada’s Resilient Communities through FireSmart (RCF) Program.
