The following statement was read in the House of Assembly today by the Honourable, Pleaman Forsey, Minister of Forestry, Agriculture and Lands:
Speaker, I rise in this Honourable House today to highlight the first phase of our 10-Year Agriculture Strategy.
Yesterday, I launched public consultations for the strategy. This is an important step in shaping the future of Newfoundland and Labrador’s agriculture sector.
We are working alongside farmers, food producers and retailers to grow the agriculture and agrifoods sector, strengthen our local food supply, and increase access to local, affordable food.
Feedback from those working in the industry is essential as we develop a strategy to create new opportunities and ensure the next generation of farmers and new entrants have the support they need to succeed.
Speaker, there is no substitute for lived experience. Those who work in and support our agriculture sector understand its opportunities and challenges firsthand. We want to hear ideas on how to:
- Create new economic opportunities in rural regions.
- Improve access to Crown land for agriculture.
- Support the next generation of farmers.
- Increase local food production and expand indoor growing.
- Extend the growing season.
- Reduce barriers facing both new and established farmers.
I encourage everyone to have their say by visiting engageNL.ca or contacting the department. The consultation is open until January 29, 2027.
Thank you.
