The following is a statement from the Honourable Craig Pardy, Minister of Finance, in response to the Canadian Taxpayers Federation’s annual Finance Minister Report Card:

“I’m encouraged to see independent recognition of the progress we are making on behalf of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. Not only have we made a significant positive improvement in terms of our grading – from an F last year under the previous administration to a C this year – but we also received the best overall performance rating in Atlantic Canada, which is quite impressive.

This report highlights our government’s strong action on delivering meaningful tax relief, including raising the basic personal amount and lowering business taxes to support growth and affordability.

We’ve also taken a disciplined approach to spending, keeping increases among the lowest in the country, while continuing to deliver the programs and services people rely on.

While we know there is more work to do, particularly in addressing long-standing debt challenges, we are focused on building a stronger, more sustainable fiscal future. We are committed to doing this through smarter spending and efficient planning and this report shows we are moving in the right direction. We will continue to make responsible decisions that put the people of this province first.”
