The Provincial Government is advising residents of Newfoundland and Labrador that the deadline to have studded tires removed from their vehicles is Friday, May 15.
Under the Highway Traffic Act, studded tires are only permitted between November 1 and April 30. Due to the long-term weather forecast, the deadline has been extended this year to May 15.
To support safer roads and communities in Newfoundland and Labrador, motorists are reminded to drive safely and exercise caution at all times.
Please remember to:
- Slow down and drive appropriately for the weather conditions.
- Use low-beam headlights in fog.
- Leave extra space between you and the vehicle ahead for greater stopping distance.
- Watch for potholes, which can form suddenly during freeze-thaw cycles.
- Be alert for moose and other animals, especially at dawn and dusk.
- Make sure any cargo in truck beds is safely and properly secured.
- Give yourself extra time to reach your destination safely.
- Ensure your brakes, wipers, and lights are all working properly.
- Check all fluid levels regularly.
