The following statement was read in the House of Assembly today by the Honourable Mike Goosney, Minister of Government Services:

Speaker, throughout the summer thousands of motorists will travel our roads and highways to experience all that Newfoundland and Labrador has to offer.

To support safer roads and communities as traffic increases, I encourage all drivers to make safety their top priority.

Most motor vehicle collisions and related injuries are preventable when we follow the rules of the road: never drive impaired or distracted, always wear your seatbelt, obey posted speed limits, slow down in construction zones, and adjust your driving to changing weather and road conditions.

Drivers should also maintain a safe stopping distance from the vehicle ahead, be alert for moose and other wildlife, especially at dawn and dusk, secure cargo properly, and ensure their vehicles are in good working order before heading out.

For those using off-road vehicles, safety remains just as important. Never ride impaired, always wear safety gear, use proper riding techniques, avoid travelling alone, share your route, and ensure your vehicle is well maintained.

Let’s all do our part to ensure a safe and enjoyable summer.

Thank you, Speaker.
