The Provincial Government is encouraging residents across the province to take precautions to protect their health from extreme cold weather conditions, which are expected this week.
The risk of adverse health effects increases when wind chill values fall below –27 Celsius. Potential impacts include windburn, frostbite, and hypothermia.
These risks can be reduced by wearing appropriate clothing and limiting time outdoors as much as possible.
The following groups are considered at a higher risk of experiencing health effects from extreme cold, such as:
- Infants under one year of age and young children.
- Seniors and older adults.
- People experiencing homelessness and are under-housed or living in poorly insulated homes.
- People who work outdoors.
- People taking certain medications including beta blockers.
- People who live alone.
