Today, the Honourable Lela Evans, Minister of Labrador Affairs, Minister of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation, and Minister of Health and Community Services, announced an investment in 20 transitional care beds in partnership with the Nunatsiavut Government.

Through an investment of $2.9 million in Budget 2026, the Provincial Government is partnering with the Nunatsiavut Government to develop the new transitional care beds, which will:

  • Provide the right level of culturally-safe care closer to home.
  • Help ease pressure on the Labrador Health Centre so that acute care services are more accessible for those who need them.

The location for the beds will be determined in consultation with community partners.

Together with the commitments in Budget 2026, including a new MRI in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, redeveloping the Paddon Home to increase long-term care capacity, and adding eight additional transitional beds at the Labrador Health Centre in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, these initiatives are making health care better for all of us.

Quotes
“As a government, we value this strong partnership with Indigenous partners which is essential for real and meaningful change and supporting healthier communities in Labrador. Our new government is listening to the health care challenges that our residents are facing, and the solutions that are coming directly from those with lived experience. As Minister of Health and Community Services and Minister of Labrador Affairs, improving access to health care for residents in the North Coast is a key priority for me. With our investment in transitional beds in partnership with the Nunatsiavut Government, we are happy to address some of the concerns of Labradorians and support improved health outcomes for the people in this region.”

“The Nunatsiavut Government welcomes these important steps to strengthen health services for Labrador Inuit. Culturally safe transitional care closer to home is especially vital for our seniors and Elders, who remain a priority for our government. Today’s announcement reflects what can be achieved when governments work together, listen to the concerns and lived experiences of the people we serve, and maintain mutual respect and understanding. We look forward to continuing this collaboration with the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and NL Health Services to ensure our people have timely, equitable access to the care they need and deserve.”
