The Honourable Helen Conway Ottenheimer, Minister of Justice and Public Safety and Attorney General, attended a ceremony on Tuesday, April 7 that welcomed 18 new graduates to the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) ranks. The addition of these new constables brings the number of RNC police officers to 410, one of the highest numbers of sworn police officers in the history of the force.

The new Provincial Government committed to safer communities by increasing the number of police officers serving throughout the province. It also committed to restoring the RNC’s active-duty complement to its highest level in a decade by filling all vacant positions and adding new ones where needed to meet provincial policing demands. Currently, there are 20 cadets participating in a 32-week cadet training program offered by the Atlantic Police Academy in Prince Edward Island. It is anticipated that once these cadets graduate in September 2026, the RNC will have the highest number of sworn police officers in the force’s history. In addition, another cohort of 20 cadets is expected to begin their training in July 2026.

The Atlantic Police Academy training program is designed to prepare and qualify candidates to become an RNC officer. With a blend of academic and tactical training, the program uses real-life situations and simulations to prepare candidates for the law enforcement profession. Information about the RNC Cadet Training Program is available here.
