The following statement was read in the House of Assembly today by the Honourable Helen Conway Ottenheimer, Minister of Justice and Public Safety:
Speaker, I rise today to recognize the remarkable career of Chief Justice Raymond P. Whalen. Chief Justice Whalen retired yesterday, following 18 years of distinguished service to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador as a Supreme Court Justice, which includes nearly 12 years as Chief Justice.
Chief Justice Whalen was appointed to the Supreme Court in 2008 and throughout his career, he has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the rule of law, judicial independence and the administration of justice.
Before joining the bench, Chief Justice Whalen built an accomplished legal career in private practice and corporate leadership, bringing a wealth of experience to the judiciary.
On a personal note, I would like to thank Chief Justice Whalen for the strong and constructive relationship we have developed during my time as Minister of Justice and Public Safety and Attorney General.
Chief Justice Whalen has been an inspiration to so many in the legal community and will be missed.
I invite all honourable members to join me in extending sincere thanks to Chief Justice Whalen for his many years of service and wishing him and his family every happiness and good health in the years ahead.
