The Honourable Lloyd Parrott, Minister of Energy and Mines, today provided a further update on wind-hydrogen development in the province.
Located at the Port of Argentia, Newfoundland and Labrador, Argentia Renewables (Pattern Energy) was pursuing a 300-megawatt wind-hydrogen project on lands owned by the Port of Argentia.
A Contingency Reserve Order was established in April 2024 to support Pattern Energy project. Pattern Energy advises that it remains committed to Argentia and the province and has changed focus from wind-hydrogen to a wind only project. Pattern has not requested an extension, and the Contingency Reserve Order will not be extended beyond March 31, 2026.
On March 27, 2024, the Provincial Government established a 2,457-hectare reserve under the Wind Energy Contingency Land Reserve Order and on April 1, 2024, a Wind Reserve Consideration Letter was issued to Argentia Renewables Wind LP (Pattern Energy) advising of the establishment of the Contingency Reserve Order. This enabled Pattern Energy to apply for Crown lands within the reserve for the possible placement of contingent wind turbines that may be needed to maintain the company’s 300-megawatt wind energy project on Port of Argentia Lands detailed as Phase One in Pattern’s response to the Crown Lands Call for Bids. The Term of the Contingency Reserve was for 18 months, to September 28, 2025. On August 22, 2025, the Provincial Government announced that the reserve had been extended to March 31, 2026.
