The federal, provincial and municipal governments are jointly investing more than $139 million in the first phase of the Riverhead Wastewater Treatment Facility expansion in St. John’s.
Through the cost‑shared National and Regional Projects program of the New Building Canada Fund, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador has contributed $34.8 million toward this important work.
This expansion is essential not only for the City of St. John’s, but also for the surrounding municipalities it serves. The project will increase the facility’s capacity to treat wastewater and includes design and site preparation for a future secondary treatment facility. These upgrades will help the City of St. John’s move closer to meeting national wastewater treatment standards, support a healthier environment, and also allow for housing development.
This investment reflects the Provincial Government’s commitment to environmental protection and sustainable growth. Clean waterways play a vital role in the province’s health, economy, and overall quality of life. This project demonstrates what can be achieved when provincial, federal and municipal governments work together toward a shared goal.
The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador remains committed to ensuring communities across the province have reliable infrastructure, strong environmental safeguards and the capacity to grow. Investments like this not only deliver critical infrastructure improvements, they also reflect government’s long‑term vision rooted in planning, community benefits and strong partnerships.
