The Provincial Government is committed to building safer communities and working collaboratively with industry to provide concrete steps to improve road safety across Newfoundland and Labrador.

More than $250 million has been announced for highway construction projects for 2026-27, as part of the Provincial Government’s annual Roads Plan. The Roads Plan outlines a list of highway construction projects planned for the 2026-27 highway construction season and a partial list of projects planned for 2027-28. In addition to major highways and regional trunk roads, the plan also includes many provincially owned local roads.

While there has been significant spending on highway construction over the past several years, there has not been a substantial increase in the amount of road work completed. The Provincial Government has been working closely with the Heavy Civil Association of Newfoundland and Labrador to determine how to address the matter, while also ensuring the taxpayers of the province are receiving good value for money.

This year’s plan includes additional strategic larger projects that will allow government and contractors to work more efficiently, cutting down on the moving of equipment in and out of multiple places, saving money by doing more work from one location, and helping contractors work more efficiently, especially when setting up in quarries and asphalt plants.

In January, residents were encouraged to provide information on roads to be considered for the plan such as region, route name or number, the nearest municipality or landmark, and the type of road issue being experienced. Over 500 suggestions were received. This information was considered along with technical input from the department’s engineers to help finalize this year’s plan.

Other significant factors in determining the list of highway construction projects selected for the plan include the impacts of climate change, commercial, industry and tourism impacts, daily traffic volumes, speed, road condition ratings, and populations serviced.

In the coming days, the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure will begin issuing tenders for road construction work to begin this construction season, beginning with the following projects:

• Rehabilitation of Section of Route 230, Bonavista Highway, Lethbridge to Southern Bay
• Rehabilitation of Sections of TCH between Glenwood and Lewisporte
• Rehabilitation of Sections of TCH Between Saint Judes and Corner Brook
• Culvert Replacements on TCH between Pasadena and Corner Brook

Tenders will continue to be issued throughout the next few months in preparation for the upcoming construction season.
