The Provincial Government has awarded a contract valued at more than $14.4 million to JCL Investments Inc. for the replacement of the Tailrace Bridge and associated highway realignment work in Deer Lake.
The project includes the construction of a new bridge and a new Trans‑Canada Highway alignment in the area. The new modern bridge will be built at a higher elevation to allow for increased water fluctuations related to climate change. It will also improve safety through wider lanes and pedestrian walkways.
Work under the contract also includes grading and paving of the highway alignment, drainage installation, granular base placement, guiderail and culvert installation, paving, signage, and landscaping.
In addition, the project will create a new access point west of the bridge, featuring auxiliary lanes, an access road, a parking area, and a multi‑use pathway that will connect to the existing day‑use park, improving accessibility and recreational opportunities for residents and visitors.
The project is being delivered with 50-50 cost‑shared funding from the federal and provincial governments under the federal Disaster Mitigation and Adaptation Fund, a national program that helps Canadian communities better withstand climate‑related disasters, including floods, wildfires, droughts, extreme heat and coastal erosion. In Newfoundland and Labrador, this program provides investments for projects that usually support long‑term climate adaptation initiatives such as the construction, maintenance and replacement of bridges and other critical transportation infrastructure.
Enhancing safety in communities, including road safety for all users, was a key commitment made by the Provincial Government, alongside a focus on responsible investment and long‑term planning that prioritizes today’s needs while securing the province’s future.
As part of this commitment, more than $250 million was allocated for the provincial Roads Plan in Budget 2026: Opportunity for All of Us, which includes better health care, lower taxes and safer communities. The Tailrace Bridge replacement in Deer Lake is one of the projects included in this year’s plan. More detailed information on Budget 2026 is available here.
