An investment of $23.6 million from the provincial, federal and municipal governments was announced today to support municipal infrastructure improvements across Newfoundland and Labrador. Focused primarily on drinking water and wastewater systems, these projects will help strengthen essential infrastructure and support safer, more resilient communities. A complete list of approved projects is available in the backgrounder below.
The announcement took place today in Mount Pearl where approximately $5.3 million of the funding was allocated for upgrades to water, sewer and stormwater infrastructure along Holden Street, as part of phase one of the Kenmount Hill development. It is anticipated the project will support approximately 435 existing households and enable up to 1,390 new housing units.
The Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund, cost-shared among federal, provincial and municipal governments, is aimed at existing municipal infrastructure needs as well as those associated with future housing developments. Through this agreement, Newfoundland and Labrador has been allocated $123.1 million from the Government of Canada to address municipal infrastructure projects that preserve existing capacity or increase reliability and access to drinking water, wastewater, stormwater and solid waste systems to support current and future populations.
These projects will help the municipalities plan for growth and improve the quality of life for residents. They also align with the new government’s commitment to a multi-year planning approach for roads, water, and sewer, as well as prioritizing funding for municipalities working to improve their water supplies.
