Today, the Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, participated in an announcement on the reopening of the Beaver Brook Antimony Mine in central Newfoundland – creating approximately 100 new jobs for the people of the province.
Premier Ball was joined at the announcement by the Honourable Siobhan Coady, Minister of Natural Resources; the Honourable John Haggie, Minister of Health and Community Services and MHA for Gander; the Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development and MHA for Grand Falls-Windsor – Buchans; Huang Chongbiao, Vice President of China Minmetals Rare Earth Group; Scott Simms, MP for Coast of Bays – Central – Notre Dame; industry representatives and community leaders.
The reopening of the Beaver Brook mine is a significant announcement for the people of central Newfoundland, and the mining industry as a whole. Some 160,000 tonnes of antimony ore per year will be mined at full production and processed into concentrate. Antimony alloys are used in batteries, low friction metals and cable sheathing, among other products. Antimony compounds are used to make flame-proofing materials, paints, ceramic enamels, glass and pottery.
The restart of the Beaver Brook Mine is just the latest major recent development for the mining industry in Newfoundland and Labrador, including:
- Vale’s underground mine – resulting in a billion dollars in economic activity annually;
- The start of a new fluorspar mine in St. Lawrence, which saw over 255 full-time positions in 2018; and
- IOC’s new Moss Pit – with more than 1,700 employees, production is forecasted to be over 21 million tonnes in 2019.
Reopening Beaver Brook mine demonstrates how the Provincial Government and industry are unlocking the province’s natural resource wealth and creating safe, high paying jobs and supply opportunities. Projects, such as Beaver Brook, are creating new opportunities for trades people, engineers, and many other fields as well as more opportunities for small businesses – such as restaurants, gas stations, and accommodations providers – to grow and expand their operations.
