Seniors’ Advocate, Susan Walsh, joined by Grade 5 students of Goulds Elementary, launched a new contest to celebrate Seniors Month by challenging ageism in Newfoundland and Labrador.
The Growing Bolder – Young Eyes on Bold Lives Art Contest gives elementary students in the province the opportunity to recognize and celebrate the seniors in their lives by submitting artwork that shows something they love, admire, or find inspiring about a grandparent, great grandparent or any older adult. This intergenerational perspective challenges ageist views about older adults.
The contest aligns with the OSA’s 2025 Seniors’ Month theme: Growing Bolder — a celebration of the confidence, courage, and continued personal growth that comes with aging. Submissions will be shared on the OSA’s website and social media throughout June.
Applications open Tuesday, May 20, 2025. Parents or guardians can help a student enter by visiting the website of the Office of the Seniors’ Advocate at www.seniorsadvocatenl.ca. All students who enter will also have a chance to win a prize through random draws.
Quote
“The students of Goulds Elementary certainly identified many positive things that their nanny’s and poppy’s do for so many people. There was no sign of ageist views. Yet, as we age the World Health Organization tells us that one in two of us will be ageist and especially against seniors. This must stop. I am asking the youth of today to help all of us remember, through their artwork, the bold lives senior in Newfoundland and Labrador live.”
