An investment of more than $35.6 million from provincial, federal and municipal governments was announced today for a number of municipal infrastructure improvements on the West Coast of the province. Focused primarily on drinking water and wastewater upgrades, these projects align with the Provincial Government’s commitment to safer communities. A complete listing of the projects is available in the backgrounder below.
The announcement took place today in Corner Brook where more than $12 million of the funding was allocated for a new water storage tank, water pumping station and an expansion of the City’s water distribution system. The project aims to provide water to a new residential development area and tie into the existing water distribution system, serving 8,576 existing homes and enabling 300 new homes.
The Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund, cost-shared among federal, provincial and municipal governments, is aimed at existing municipal infrastructure needs as well as those associated with future housing developments. Through this agreement, Newfoundland and Labrador has been allocated $123.1 million from the Government of Canada to address municipal infrastructure projects that preserve existing capacity or increase reliability and access to drinking water, wastewater, stormwater and solid waste systems to support current and future populations.
These projects will help the municipalities plan for growth and improve the quality of life for residents. They also align with the new government’s commitment to a multi-year planning approach for roads, water, and sewer, as well as prioritizing funding for municipalities working to improve their water supplies.
