The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is investing $6 million in new moose fencing and brush clearing along key sections of provincially operated highways, reinforcing its commitment to safer roads and stronger communities.
The announcement was made today by the Honourable Barry Petten, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, alongside Art Puddister of the Save Our People Action Committee, an organization dedicated to raising awareness about the dangers of moose-vehicle collisions.
Two new moose fencing projects will be undertaken in high-risk areas identified through collision data analysis. On the Avalon Peninsula, fencing will extend four kilometres from the Foxtrap weigh scales to Round Pond. In the western region, 6.5 kilometres of fencing will run from Glide Lake Road along the Trans-Canada Highway to Little Harbour.
These targeted investments are part of a broader, data-driven approach to improving highway safety across the province. Evidence shows that in areas where moose fencing has already been installed, collisions have been significantly reduced.
Tenders for both projects have been issued, with construction expected to begin later this year.
The moose fencing projects will be complemented by a number of brush clearing contracts that will be issued this year which will improve visibility and further reduce collision risks.

This initiative delivers on key commitments in Budget 2026: Opportunity for All of Us, which includes better health care, lower taxes and safer communities. This represents a new vision for the province to improve the overall quality of life for residents by making everyday living more affordable, for all of us. Quotes
“Nothing is more important than the safety of our people. For too many families, moose-vehicle collisions are not just statistics; they are life-changing events. This investment is about preventing those accidents before they happen. By targeting high-risk areas and investing responsibly in proven solutions like moose fencing and brush clearing, we are making our highways safer and strengthening the communities that rely on them every day.”

“SOPAC is very grateful to the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador for continuing to invest in fencing and brush cutting along the province’s highways. We look forward to working with government towards a long-term plan to invest in these two necessary projects, which will save lives and also reduce costs to the health care system.”
