The Honourable Barry Petten, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, today announced that an additional vessel will join the MV Kamutik to provide dedicated freight service along Labrador’s North Coast. The Astron W is being dispatched to assist with the large volume of freight needed to be moved to the North Coast, particularly building materials needing to be shipped to the communities at the start of a short construction season.
The Provincial Government recognizes the unique challenges of delivering goods to the North Coast of Labrador where remote locations, weather conditions, and limited transportation options can impact supply chains. Strengthening marine freight capacity is a key step toward improving reliability and supporting the needs of residents and businesses. The addition of the Astron W, a temporarily contracted swing vessel in the provincial fleet, will improve the movement of goods to coastal communities that depend heavily on marine transportation for essential supplies.
With the Astron W operating as a freight-only vessel alongside the Kamutik, this enhanced service will increase freight capacity to better meet demand, improve the consistency and timeliness of shipments, help reduce pressure on passenger-freight services and support local communities that rely on regular delivery of goods, supplies, and materials. The service will remain in place for the initial portion of the season, with the department monitoring and adjusting the location of the vessel as necessary.
This initiative reflects the Provincial Government’s ongoing commitment to improving transportation services in Labrador and ensuring residents have dependable access to essential goods.
Ensuring efficient and reliable supply chains is critical to supporting quality of life and economic activity in coastal communities. The addition of the Astron W will help strengthen service along the North Coast and better meet the needs of residents.
