The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is providing funding for a new child care centre at Memorial University’s Grenfell Campus in Corner Brook that will help increase access to affordable child care for families in western Newfoundland.
The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development is providing approximately $665,000 as part of its Operating Grant Program to ensure the new centre can provide $10-a-day child care for up to 30 children.
An additional $92,000 is also being provided by the Provincial Government for equipment and supplies at the centre.
The new child care centre, located in the Marina Redmond Centre, is anticipated to open by later this year.
Budget 2026 includes close to $33 million to support child care spaces. This includes support for approximately 1,200 spaces in progress and the creation of an additional 400 new spaces. There is also more than $3.6 million for inclusion supports for child care services. This will strengthen inclusive child care, celebrate diversity, and help ensure all children can access the care and early learning they deserve.

Budget 2026 includes funding an additional 400 new spaces, and we are excited that we can work with Memorial University’s Grenfell Campus and the City of Corner Brook to ensure 30 new spaces will help families on the west coast. We are looking forward to creating more spaces in the coming months.”

“Providing access to quality child care for parents in our campus community has been a long-standing priority at Grenfell Campus. This partnership with the City of Corner Brook and the Humber Community YMCA, with support from the Provincial Government, has helped us achieve this goal. We are committed to supporting our employees and students in every way we can, and access to high-quality, reliable and affordable child care is an important part of that commitment. We are especially pleased to have child care spaces available for our Grenfell students, who are balancing parenthood with their academic goals.”
