Today, the Honourable Lela Evans, Minister of Women and Gender Equality, announced a $700,000 federal-provincial agreement with Women and Gender Equality Canada to support crisis hotline services for individuals experiencing gender-based violence in Newfoundland and Labrador.
This funding, to be distributed over five years, will help crisis hotline providers in our province sustain and enhance trauma-informed services, ensuring individuals can access timely support when they need it. In Newfoundland and Labrador, crisis hotline services are operated by End Sexual Violence NL and the Transition House Association of Newfoundland and Labrador.
The funding is part of a national investment of $31 million over five years, with $6.2 million in ongoing funding, announced while Federal, Provincial and Territorial (FPT) Ministers Responsible for the Status of Women were meeting in Moncton, New Brunswick. Newfoundland and Labrador was represented by the Honourable Lela Evans, Minister of Women and Gender Equality.
In addition, Women and Gender Equality Canada announced $607.4 million over four years, beginning in 2027-28, to continue the implementation of the National Action Plan to End Gender-based Violence.
This announcement builds on the initial investment of $539.3 million over five years announced in 2022-23, to support the provinces and territories in their efforts to implement the National Action Plan. Newfoundland and Labrador’s portion of the initial five-year agreement was $13.6 million.
While in Moncton, Minister Evans had an opportunity to meet and speak with her Atlantic counterparts and participated in discussions with Federal, Provincial and Territorial Indigenous leaders and representatives on shared priorities, including violence prevention, human trafficking, major project impacts, and online safety.
