The Honourable Tony Wakeham, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today congratulated the Royal Canadian Legion on marking a century of service to veterans, their families and communities across Canada.

Incorporated in 1926, the Legion is Canada’s largest veteran support and community service organization. Legion branches have become cornerstones of communities big and small across our province by providing places for people to gather, connect and serve. Through its support for veterans, advocacy efforts and volunteer contributions, the Legion has made an immeasurable impact on the social fabric of our province.

The Provincial Government also recognizes the Legion’s longstanding commitment to remembrance. Through the annual Poppy Campaign, Remembrance Day and Memorial Day ceremonies, commemorative initiatives and youth education programs, the Legion helps ensure that Canadians continue to honour the courage, service and sacrifice of those who served our country. In Newfoundland and Labrador, that commitment was demonstrated most recently through the Legion’s leadership in the repatriation of the Unknown Soldier to the Newfoundland National War Memorial.
