Through a $14-million agreement with the Town of Lewisporte, the Provincial Government is helping transform the community’s former marine terminal into a catalyst for economic revitalization, investment and future growth.
The agreement includes an additional $4 million on top of the $10 million already committed by the Provincial Government to support the transfer of the wharf and associated lands to the town and advance economic diversification.
The funding will help the Town of Lewisporte advance its vision for transforming the former marine terminal into a catalyst for future economic growth and development.
The Lewisporte marine terminal was built in the early 1960s and historically served as a key passenger and freight hub for Labrador coastal communities. Ferry service from Lewisporte was operated by Marine Atlantic until 1997, then by the Provincial Government, before being discontinued in 2019 when a new service was established from Happy Valley-Goose Bay.
Supporting rural Newfoundland and Labrador remains a key priority for the Provincial Government. The transfer of the Lewisporte wharf, subject to an agreement of purchase and sale to be completed this year, will allow the town to take the lead in advancing redevelopment opportunities, while ensuring an important community asset continues to contribute to the region’s economic future.
