Provincial Government Expanding Humberwood Treatment Centre for Improved Access to Addiction Treatment and Recovery Supports

  • Health and Community Services

October 1, 2026

The Honourable Joedy Wall, Minister of Health and Community Services and Minister of Mental Health and Addictions, today announced an expansion of services at the Humberwood Treatment Centre in Corner Brook that will improve access to addictions treatment and recovery supports.

Through an investment of $3.75 million in Budget 2026 as part of a multi-year project totaling $8.25 million, this expansion will:

  • Increase access to community-based detox services by establishing four dedicated short-stay beds for individuals requiring same-day or next-day admission in the first phase.
  • Add six additional beds to increase in-patient capacity at the Humberwood Treatment Centre in the second phase.

Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services (NLHS) recently engaged the services of CORE Engineering to complete detailed design work for the first phase of enhancements to Humberwood Treatment Centre, which is expected to start this fall, as well as a preliminary scope of work for the second phase.

Establishing community-based detox services on the West Coast is an important step in delivering on the Provincial Government’s platform commitment to increase access to addictions recovery services for residents throughout the province. These services will provide same day access to withdrawal management and support a smoother transition to in-patient services when clinically appropriate.

The Humberwood Treatment Centre is currently a 12-bed, 28-day in-patient treatment facility that offers programs and services to support the recovery and growth of individuals 18 years and over who are living with substance use disorders and addictions. When the expansion is complete, the centre will provide access to 18 inpatient treatment beds and four community-based detox beds.

This expansion aligns with the recommendation of the All-Party Committee on Mental Health, Substance Use and Addictions to improve access to substance use and addictions detox and inpatient treatment services, which is also a stated priority of the Provincial Alcohol Action Plan.
