Residents are reminded that all babies under six months of age, born in Newfoundland and Labrador on or after May 1, 2026, and adults aged 75 years and over, are eligible to receive the publicly funded immunization against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).
RSV is a seasonal respiratory virus that usually causes mild, cold-like symptoms in most individuals, but can present significant health risks for infants and older adults.
The Honourable Joedy Wall, Minister of Health and Community Services, Dr. Janice Fitzgerald, Chief Medical Officer of Health, and Dr. Lynette Bowes, Pediatrician, Clinical Chief – Children and Women’s Health, Eastern-Urban Zone, NL Health Services, today provided updates on the roll-out of the RSV immunization which was expanded through an investment of $3.9 million in Budget 2026.
Starting today, adults aged 75 years and older can book an appointment by phone or online to receive an RSV vaccine. NL Health Services will offer vaccination clinics for this age group from October 13 to 18, 2026. Eligible adults can also get the RSV vaccine through participating pharmacists and physicians.

Public health is also reminding residents that RSV immunization is offered to babies aged six months and younger before discharge from the hospital post-partum, which provides them with the best protection against RSV.
RSV immunization will also continue to be available for high-risk groups that were previously eligible for the publicly funded immunization which includes:
- Children up to two years old entering their first or second RSV season, who are at high risk of severe infection.
- Adults aged 60-plus in congregate living facilities.
Expansion of the RSV immunization program will ensure protection against severe health complications from RSV. The expanded program aligns with the latest recommendations from the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) and reflects the Provincial Government’s commitment to ensuring better health outcomes for all of us.
Quote
“We know that immunization is one of the most effective ways to prevent serious illness and protect the health of our communities. Expanding access to RSV immunization will help safeguard those at highest risk of severe RSV infection, while helping to reduce preventable hospital visits and pressure on our health-care system. I encourage everyone who is eligible to take advantage of this protection.”
