The following statement was read in the House of Assembly today by the Honourable Chris Tibbs, Minister of Social Supports and Well-Being:

October is Foster Families Month, a time to recognize and thank the foster parents and kinship carers across Newfoundland and Labrador who provide safe, caring and supportive homes for children and youth.

Our government is committed to supporting these caregivers and increasing the number of foster homes across the province so more children and youth can experience the stability and belonging they deserve.

That is why we are investing $8 million to strengthen financial supports for foster families and kinship carers, increasing compensation rates, enhancing training opportunities, and improving the application process for prospective foster parents.

We have also established a dedicated province-wide team to actively process applications and support recruitment efforts.

As we recognize Foster Families Month, we are also in the midst of our fall Foster a Future campaign. Over the coming weeks, residents will continue to see and hear messages highlighting the need for more foster families and encouraging people to learn more about fostering.

Today, more than 900 children and youth in Newfoundland and Labrador are in care and unable to live with their families. If you have ever considered fostering, I encourage you to visit the Foster a Future website and learn more. One decision to open your home can make a lasting difference in a child’s life.
