The following statement was read in the House of Assembly today by the Honourable Paul Dinn, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development:

Speaker, I’m excited to rise today to recognize an outstanding accomplishment of St. John’s student Moroti Adegboyega.

Moroti, a Grade 12 student at St. Bonaventure’s College, created an autonomous aquatic robot that removes plastic debris from the water while minimizing contact with marine life.

Earlier this year, Moroti represented Canada at the Stockholm Junior Water Prize in Sweden. Representatives from more than 40 countries competed in this event, which is considered a leading international water competition for young people.

I’m proud to say that Moroti brought the prize home to Newfoundland and Labrador.

Speaker, I met with Moroti and his family this summer and was impressed and inspired by what this outstanding young man has accomplished.

This past weekend, Moroti was in Ontario at the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health as a guest speaker, panelist and expert on youth innovation.

Moroti, we are extremely proud of what you have accomplished so far. Good luck in your future endeavours. The sky is the limit.

Newfoundland and Labrador will be right there to support you and we look forward to what you will accomplish next.

I ask all honourable colleagues to join me in celebrating Moroti Adegboyega.

Thank you.
