1. What is cargo?

The Cargo Securement Regulations define cargo as:
“cargo” means all articles of material carried by a vehicle, including those used in the operation of the vehicle but does not include passengers. — Section 2(e) of Cargo Securement Regulations

2. Who does cargo securement apply to?

These regulations apply to the following:

1. A vehicle transporting cargo on a highway in the province.
2. A vehicle that exceeds a registered gross vehicle weight of 4500 kilograms.
3. Cargo transported by an intermodal container.

3. What is included in the cargo securement system?

Includes vehicle structure, blocking and bracing equipment, and securing devices.

Is maintained by carriers and drivers.

Must be in good working order, no obvious signs of damage or weakness.

Must be used within its capability.

4. What does “used within its capability” mean?

It has to be able to do the job. It has to be strong enough to contain, immobilize, and secure the cargo if it is subjected to forces. Common forces when driving are braking, accelerating, making a turn and climbing a hill.
