Manufacturing

The provincial manufacturing industry produces a wide variety of products. A large portion of provincial manufacturing output is concentrated in refined petroleum, food processing (primarily fish), fabricated metal manufacturing, non-ferrous metal (nickel) production and processing, and newsprint, there are many firms with core competencies that are world class. There are also significant strengths in the metal fabrication, ship and boat building, and wood products sectors. 

MANUFACTURING INSIGHTS

Manufacturing Insights is a partnership initiative with the objective of promoting the importance of the manufacturing sector within Newfoundland and Labrador by highlighting the regional opportunities and successes within the manufacturing sector, raising awareness of resources available to assist the sector, and promoting collaboration and co-operation among stakeholder groups. This initiative is delivered in close cooperation with the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters (CME), the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and other partner groups.

MANUFACTURING PRODUCTIVITY

Manufacturing Productivity Program is a uniquely hands on, leveraged learning, LEAN training initiative designed to provide LEAN training for approximately to eligible firms across the province. It consists of custom-built LEAN training modules delivered using a Learn by doing training methodology. Participants benefit from hands on training delivered by expertly trained, third party LEAN consultants. 

TECHNOLOGY ASSESSMENT AND ADOPTION DIAGNOSTIC PILOT PROJECT

With funding support from IET, the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and the National Research council (NRC), CME-NL is engaged to deliver the diagnostic tool which:

  • enable firms to gain a better understanding of their technology needs,
  • offer options on what technologies are available to meet these needs and
  • assist the Department and other potential funding partners in assessing any related applications for funding.

The Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters NL (CME-NL) deliver a technology assessment diagnostic tool designed to build awareness within firms of what their technology needs are and offer options on what technologies are available to meet these needs.

NETWORKS

In an effort to promote sector stakeholder inclusion and stimulate sector growth, IET supports the development of business networks.  The networks are designed around small clusters of companies with a common goal of sustainability and building core competencies. IET is currently working with the following networks: the Fluent Manufacturing Consortium, the Trinity Conception Continuous Improvement Network and the Central Continuous Improvement Network. Each of the groups is at various stages of development.
