Investments in infrastructure help create employment for tradespeople. Construction of new schools, long-term care homes, and a west coast hospital have led to hundreds of jobs for tradespeople in Newfoundland and Labrador. Investments in maintenance and repairs to existing buildings and funding for transportation infrastructure are also contributing to local economies.

New Mental Health and Addictions Hospital

  • Construction has started on a new 102-bed adult mental and addictions hospital in St. John’s.
  • Employment: More than 400 jobs are expected to be created with 200 workers expected onsite at peak construction.

  • Budget 2021-22 investment: $29 million
West Coast Hospital

West Coast Hospital

  • A new 164-bed acute care west coast hospital is under construction in Corner Brook. Construction is anticipated to be completed in late 2023
  • Employment: 1,000 skilled trades jobs are expected to be created over the four years of construction.
  • Project value: $722.8 million (net present value)

Happy Valley-Goose Bay Mental Health Care Unit

Happy Valley-Goose Bay Mental Health Care Unit

  • A six-bed extension for mental health care will be built at the Labrador Health Centre in Happy Valley- Goose Bay.
  • Employment: The Newfoundland and Labrador company building the extension is hiring trades- people from the province while construction is ongoing.
  • Project value: $6.1 million
  • Budget 2021-22 investment: $4.8 million
St. Alban’s K-12 School

St. Alban’s K-12 School

  • A new Kindergarten to Grade 12 school will open in St. Alban’s for students and staff in the Bay d’Espoir region.
  • Employment: 100 per cent of tradespeople working on the construction site have been from Newfoundland and Labrador.
  • Project value: $18.8 million

Gander Long-term Care Home and Grand Falls Windsor Long-term Care Home

  • Construction has been completed on new 60-bed long-term care homes in Gander and Grand Falls-Windsor.
  • Employment: Close to 1,000 trades people have worked on both sites combined during construction. 87 per cent of those positions filled by tradespeople living 200 kilometres of the sites.

Paradise Intermediate School

  • Construction is nearing completion on the new school and will open in September for approximately 800 students between Grades 6 to 9.
  • Employment: Dozens of tradespeople from Newfoundland and Labrador have worked on site each month since construction started in 2019.
  • Project value: $42.8 million
  • Budget 2021-22 investment: $8.0 million

Gander Academy

  • A new Gander Academy will open to students and staff in September 2021.
  • Employment: The construction site has employed dozens of tradespeople each month over the course of construction.
  • Project value: $22.9 million

Bay Roberts Primary School

  • Coley’s Point Elementary will be replaced by a new Bay Roberts Primary when the new school opens for Kindergarten to Grade 3 students and staff this September.

Corner Brook Long-term Care Home

Corner Brook Long-term Care Home

Construction of Newfoundland and Labrador’s first public-private partnership project was completed on time and on budget in March 2020, leading to hundreds of jobs for local tradespeople during construction and 150 new healthcare positons. Project value: $120 million (net present value)

Botwood Protective Care Unit

Botwood Protective Care Unit

  • A new 20-bed protective care unit is opening at the Dr. Hugh Twomey Health Centre in Botwood.
  • Employment: 240 tradespeople have worked at the site during construction.
  • Project value: $8.5 million
Roads

Roads

  • Hundreds of millions of dollars has been invested in improving highways throughout the province leading to more than 2,500 lane kilometres of pavement since 2017, including the continued construction of the Trans-Labrador Highway. Government anticipates the highway being completely paved in 2022
