Thoughtful investments create meaningful opportunities. They reflect a commitment to a future where individuals, families, and communities can succeed together. A future where people don’t just come from Newfoundland and Labrador, they come to it.
Better Services
Your government is investing to deliver better services, supports, and access for all residents and businesses. Budget 2026 includes:
- Putting over $25 million back into the pockets of vehicle owners through continuation of a 50 per cent reduction in the cost of registering vehicles. This includes passenger vehicles, light trucks and taxis.
- Establishment of a Red Tape Reduction Office.
- Expanding and improving the number of government services available online for residents and businesses to shorten wait times, while also keeping in-person services available.
Education
An investment in children and youth is an investment for all of us. Our investment will help create a stronger education system in Newfoundland and Labrador. Budget 2026 includes:
Early Learning and Child Care
- Almost $33 million to support child care spaces. This includes approximately 1,200 spaces in progress and the creation of an additional 400 new spaces.
- Continuing $10-a-day child care.
- More than $3.6 million for inclusion supports for child care services. This will strengthen inclusive child care, celebrate diversity, and help ensure all children can access the care and early learning they deserve.
- Establishing an early childhood educator steering committee and an early childhood advisory panel to inform on actions and priorities.
K-12 Education
- Almost $625 million for educators, teaching and learning assistants. This is a $29 million increase to enable the addition of 94 teachers and 20 teaching and learning assistants.
- Close to $20 million this year to provide education supports to Indigenous children.
- $1 million to place social workers in schools as part of a provincial expansion to the Doorways Program to support the mental health of students.
- To help ensure a safe environment for children and staff in every school, $500,000 is being provided for new automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and for additional first aid training for educational staff.
Post-Secondary Education
- Almost $500 million to continue support for Memorial University and the College of the North Atlantic. This investment includes support for a 2026 tuition freeze, putting money back into the pockets of students.
- Over $40 million for the new Graduate Tuition Refund Program starting next fiscal year. This means that graduates who stay, work, and live in the province will receive a tuition refund.
- Support for an Apprenticeship Training Program, developed with industry partners, to help ensure a skilled workforce for future development projects.
Protecting Our Environment
To help communities and residents be prepared for climate change and build resilience to its impacts, Budget 2026 includes:
- $36 million for the Oil to Electric Rebate Program.
- $3.6 million for the implementation and improvement of waste management initiatives.
- $2.3 million over two fiscal years to produce flood risk maps for vulnerable communities as part of the joint Flood Hazard Identification and Monitoring Program with the Federal Government.
- $100,000 to support improved community emergency response planning in rural and remote areas in partnership with the Federal Government.
Supporting Municipalities, Encouraging Strong Regions
Your government is supporting communities across Newfoundland and Labrador by investing in programs and initiatives that help them grow stronger and more vibrant. Budget 2026 includes:
- More than $184 million for Municipal Operating Grants, the Community Enhancement Employment Program, Special Assistance Grants, Provincial Shared Gas Tax Grants, and the Canada Community-Building Fund.
- Funding to develop an approach to revitalize rural Newfoundland and Labrador, implemented region by region to ensure rural and remote communities are not left behind, and that the voices of those who know them best help shape the plan forward.
