The Green Crab Invasion Jake the Puffin Jake The Puffin's Activity Booklet Jake and Sal Go to School Emily the Puffling Charley - A Day in the Bay Charley Activity Book

Miss Shannon joins us with stories from the cabin featuring a reading from the Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture’s ‘The Green Crab Invasion’ followed by a reading of ‘Charley, A Day in The Bay’ with Shannon Fisher.

‘The Green Crab Invasion’ is co-authored by Miss Fisher and highlights the adventures of Harry the Rock Crab, Harriet the Atlantic Cod and Harold the American Lobster. All hope seems to be lost for these species when invasive European Green Crab – the crabbiest crabs in the ocean – invade their Newfoundland and Labrador ocean home. It takes a helping human hand to restore hope in North Harbour!

‘Charley, A Day in The Day’ follows the journey of Charley, a young cod fish who learns about the importance of cod to Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. In this touching and informative story, Charley soon realizes that not only do people need cod fish, but sometimes cod fish need help too.

World Oceans Day Events and Contests

The United Nations officially recognizes June 8 as World Oceans Day (www.worldoceansday.org). Each year, an increasing number of countries and organizations mark this day as an opportunity to celebrate our world ocean and our personal connection to the sea. World Oceans Day raises awareness about the crucial role the ocean plays in our lives and the important ways people can help to protect it. Thousands of leading aquariums, governments, conservation organizations, schools and individuals around the world will celebrate with fun, inspirational and educational events.

Since 2008, The Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture has partnered with other government departments, agencies and organizations engaged in ocean related activities to form the NL World Oceans Day Planning Committee which organizes World Oceans Day events throughout the province each year. Visit the World Oceans Day NL Facebook Page to participate in a variety of fun-filled and educational interactive activities, games, cool videos & tutorials focused on promoting healthy ocean ecosystems.

World Oceans Day Art Contest

An annual World Oceans Day art contest brings education and awareness to schools across the province. Students are asked to create a drawing that best illustrates each year’s theme. One winner per grade is awarded an oceans related prize.

World Fisheries Day 2022 Fisheries Art Contest Winners

Each year on November 21, we come together to celebrate World Fisheries Day to highlight the importance of our fishery and ocean habitats around the world. Here in Newfoundland and Labrador the fishery remains an integral part of our economic, cultural and social well-being. To promote the importance of World Fisheries Day, the Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture sponsored a World Fisheries Day Art Contest for students from kindergarten to grade six. Please take a few moments to view photos of some of this year’s winning submissions. Individual and classroom winners will receive a fisheries themed prize pack. Thank you to all schools and students that participated in this year’s contest.
