Rabies Information

Rabies is a fatal disease of mammals that is usually spread by the bite of an infected animal. In Canada it occurs in most provinces and territories though the primary host species may vary from fox to skunk or bat.

The Province of Newfoundland and Labrador is predominantly exposed to fox rabies that exists on a permanent basis in Labrador as well as having been seen twice in recent history on the Island of Newfoundland (1988 & 2002/03). Other forms of rabies of concern include bat rabies that potentially exists wherever bats exist, and raccoon rabies that has entered Canada at least 3 times from the US in New Brunswick, Ontario and Quebec.
