Cranberry farming in Newfoundland and Labrador is a relatively recent development, only starting in the late 1990’s. A unique approach was taken by the Provincial Government to evaluate the potential for industry development in the province. This approach involved the establishment of pilot sites throughout the province in collaboration with private sector partners.
Since the initiation of this project, cranberries have been developed in the Province over five sites, one managed by the Province (Deadman’s Bay) as a research site and the others managed by private sector partners/owners.
Commercialization of the province’s cranberry industry is the next step in the process that began in 1996. Cranberry commercialization has provided expansion for four existing private farms.

Cranberry Industry Development Program 2014/15 – 2018/19
On September 10, 2014, the Department of Natural Resources, Department of Innovation, Business and Rural Development and the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency announced a $7 million federal-provincial-territorial program to further develop the Newfoundland and Labrador cranberry industry. Growing a cranberry industry will help diversify the economy, reinvigorate communities and create jobs in rural areas of the province.
This program will support growth in the cranberry industry and ensure farmers have the assistance they need to reach a sustainable level of production. The Provincial Government is investing $4 million in this initiative through the Departments of Natural Resources and Innovation, Business and Rural Development. The Government of Canada, through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, is contributing $3 million.
