The Aquaculture Development and Administration (ADA) Division oversees the sustainable growth and development of the provincial aquaculture industry, including issuing licences, inspecting facilities and enforcing compliance with regulations and licence conditions.
ADA engages with industry and other government stakeholders to support the aquaculture licensing process. ADA also provides technical advice to government and industry on aquaculture practices and techniques and delivers programs to encourage the development of the industry, such as the Aquaculture Capital Equity Program. To promote effective biosecurity, ADA works closely with the Aquatic Animal Health Division to implement and manage the department’s Aquaculture Management Area strategy for the aquaculture industry and is responsible for managing and maintaining aquaculture-dedicated bio secure wharves. ADA also supports research and performs analysis to support decision-making with respect to sustainable development. The division coordinates with industry and other provincial and federal government departments to address waste management challenges for the aquaculture industry.
Responsibilities
The main responsibilities include:
- Administration of the Aquaculture Act, 2023, Aquaculture Regulations 2025, Aquaculture Administration Regulations and the Aquaculture Ticket Offence Regulations.
- Licensing aquaculture operators through a comprehensive review and assessment process.
- Inspecting aquaculture facilities to ensure compliance with regulations, code of containment and licensing conditions.
- Administering the Environmental Biological Monitoring Program, including monitoring for presence of aquatic invasive species.
