Seafood Marketing and Development

Seafood Marketing and Development supports the fishery and aquaculture sectors through trade and market development, market intelligence, and innovation and development programs. With seafood products exported to over 38 countries, the division coordinates the province’s participation at international trade shows, delivers market intelligence to inform the fish price-setting process, and supports innovation and development activities through the administration of funding programs.

The division’s primary activities include:

  • Trade and Market Development: The department works with Newfoundland and Labrador’s seafood industry and partner organizations to increase market awareness of the province’s seafood sector by identifying and developing market opportunities for its products in both domestic and international markets. Services offered to industry include organization and participation in trade shows and export development missions, along with the development of targeted advertising and various promotional initiatives in key and emerging global markets.
  • Market Intelligence: The department delivers market analysis and support to Newfoundland and Labrador’s seafood sector by coordinating the collection and delivery of market information to industry stakeholders. In support of the fish price-setting process, the department provides market information to the Standing Fish Price-Setting Panel, as well as processor and harvester associations such as the Association of Seafood Producers (ASP) and the Fish, Food and Allied Workers (FFAW). Market information informs industry stakeholders of challenges and opportunities in seafood markets, offering insights into new, emerging and existing markets.
  • Innovation and Development Support: The department supports the harvesting, processing, and aquaculture sectors through the administration of funding programs, supporting innovation and development opportunities. The division works with industry to promote sustainable, high-quality seafood, while maintaining current knowledge of national and international fisheries developments. Responsibilities include guiding and monitoring funding programs and development projects, tracking regulatory and policy changes, and participating in or representing the department at conferences, committees, and intergovernmental forums.
