Public Consultation Information

Forest Management Planning Process

The Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture welcomes public and stakeholder involvement into the development of five-year operating plans for each Forest Management District in the province. This involvement is a key part of the sustainable forest management that provides all citizens with a formal opportunity to express their views and opinions as part of the forest management planning process.

This process also allows for consideration of all forest values that impact the future social, environmental, economic and cultural well-being of all citizens. The public engagement process has evolved over time and the department remains committed to improving the process with the objective of reducing land-use conflicts during forest management planning.

Draft forest management plans are developed in consultation with individuals and organizations interested in, or affected by, forest management activities in their respective forest management district. Meetings with known forest sector stakeholders begin early and often continue throughout the planning process. Public engagement and consultation sessions are also scheduled as part of the development of five-year operating plans.

The public can provide comment on the draft five-year operating plans online here or provide feedback in writing, or by appointment with the Supervisor of Strategic Planning with the Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture.

All feedback received is evaluated and considered by forest managers for inclusion in the final Forest Management District five-year operating plan. The plan will also be registered for review through the Environmental Assessment process, providing further opportunity for public input.
