Vital Statistics Services Expanded for Francophone Residents

A new option under the Vital Statistics Division’s section of Digital Government and Service NL’s website allows Francophone residents of the province to gain access to a secure online ordering service in French.

The initiative expedites and improves the process of issuing and receiving vital statistics documentation for those requiring this service and information in French. Marriage certificates are now available in both languages, with birth and death certificates soon to follow. Legal name change certificates are also available in bilingual format at Vital Statistics office in Mount Pearl. Certificates will be issued in bilingual format, regardless of whether the request is made in English or in French.

This is the first time that the province’s Francophone residents have access to this type of online ordering service in the French language.

Under the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Agreement on French Language Services 2018-2023, one planned action is to create partnerships to increase access to information and services in the province in French. Previous partnering efforts, in cooperation with the four Atlantic Provinces, resulted in the issuing of bilingual driver licences and photo identification cards.

Anyone wishing to use the French version of the online service to apply for a certificate can visit Vital Statistics Online Services.

“Online availability of services is a key focus for our government. Particularly over the past several months, we recognize the importance of having services accessible in an online format for residents of the province. I am delighted that we have made it possible for our residents to obtain bilingual birth, marriage, death or legal name change certificates.”
