The Provincial Government recognizes and supports National Safe Driving Week (December 1-7). This year’s message is simple: focusing on the road is not a part-time responsibility.

National Safe Driving week raises awareness of the dangers of distracted driving and encourages safer, more defensive driving habits. Driving requires complete attention, and any distraction can have deadly consequences. Transport Canada estimates that distraction – often attributed to cell phone and device use – contributes to 21 per cent of fatal collisions and 27 per cent of serious injury collisions, many of which are preventable.

Motorists also need to be prepared for driving in adverse road conditions. With the busy holiday season upon us, Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are encouraged to take care venturing out onto the roadways. Beware of collision hazards and never drive when fatigued, distracted or under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Ensure windows, mirrors, brake lights, signal lights and licence plates are clear of all debris, such as snow. Drive according to road conditions, plan ahead, and check the 511 Traveler Information System before driving.

In an effort to promote safer driving, there have been many improvements to Newfoundland and Labrador’s Highway Traffic Act. There are increased fines and tougher penalties for a number of offences such as impaired driving; amendments to the Act regarding excessive speeding, street racing, stunting and move over provisions; and stronger penalties for driving without due care and attention causing bodily harm or death.

Also, a new Off-Roads Vehicle Act modernizes and enhances safety requirements for operators of off-road vehicles, for such things as mandatory helmets, online training and consistent safety requirements for all off-road vehicles, including side-by-sides.

Quotes
“Any activity that takes your attention away from the road is a distraction. While drivers may think a quick glance at their phone is harmless, those mere seconds can lead to a tragedy. This holiday season let’s be mindful of how much can be lost if drivers are careless behind the wheel.”
