A parking garage for staff at the Health Science Centre campus with spaces for 1,000 vehicles, including five charging stations for electric vehicles, will open Monday, November 1.

The Honourable Elvis Loveless, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, will be available to discuss the opening with media today (Friday, October 29), at 1:00 p.m. at the parking garage.

Constructed on the north-west corner of the Health Sciences Centre campus, the garage is a part of a project to build the new 102-bed adult mental health and addictions hospital, currently under construction.

The garage is for employee use only, which will result in more parking spaces available closer to the Health Sciences Centre for patients, clients and visitors.

The garage will also be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and includes interior and exterior security cameras monitored by security. Two new pedestrian cross walks have been constructed on Clinch Crescent to assist with staff movement to and from the parking garage.

Avalon Healthcare Partnership was selected to design, build, finance and maintain the new adult mental health and addictions hospital in July 2020. Over the course of construction, more than 400 jobs are expected to be created. In September, 97 per cent of hours worked on site were by workers from Newfoundland and Labrador.

The latest work on the 240,000 square foot, six-storey hospital includes the construction and installation of the structural steel for the building. The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure anticipates construction of the hospital to be completed in late 2024.

The new 60-bed hostel to replace the Agnes Cowan Hostel, which was demolished to allow for the construction of the mental health hospital, will be located on the top floor of the new building.

“We are pleased to open the new parking garage for staff at the Health Sciences Centre, which is also enhancing access to parking closest to the facility for patients, clients and visitors. It was also important for us to include multiple safety features to help ensure staff are as safe as possible when using the parking garage.
